Introduction

The New Horizon Music Society was founded in Mar 1991 by freelance writer Mrs Kuo Effie Lo, as an ad hoc female ensemble under the name of Oriental Choir.

In Nov 1991, Mr Li Lie Gang, a well known vocalist and Head of Music Department, the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, was engaged to be the conductor and vocal teacher of the Choir. The Choir was officially registered in 1995 as Oriental Choir Association. To enlarge its scope of musical activities, the Association changed its name to “New Horizon Music Society” in Feb 1999 and was given the status of a charity with effect from 5 Oct 1999. The objects of the Society are:

  1. To promote the singing of art songs and folksongs through regular classroom learning;
  2. To enhance the appreciation of classical music, specifically art songs and folksongs, through the organization of relevant concerts and talks;
  3. To enrich members' love and knowledge in music, fine arts and literature.

The Society has over the last 23 years since it was officially registered in 1995, organized numerous concerts and other related activities, accumulating abundant experience in planning and organization of concerts. Members of the New Horizon Music Society have taken part and/or performed in many concerts with various artistic styles. It was invited to participate in the Arts Education Programme organized by the National Arts Council in 1995-1998, and presented a series of lunch-time concerts at several secondary schools. It also spearheaded the production of an original musical in Mandarin entitled: < Serenade> under the leadership and guidance of its artistic director Mr Li Lie Gang. <Serenade> was successfully presented at the Kallang Theatre on 26-28 May 2001 with the collaboration of three other organisations.

The New Horizon Choir under the Society performed regularly at various cultural events both in Singapore and overseas. It won a silver medal at the 16th International Festival of Advent and Christmas Music with Peter Eben’s Prize in Dec 2006 at Prague, Czech Republic. In July 2011, choir members joined the “Shiyan” and “NeWing” choirs to participate at the 3rd Singapore International Chinese Choral Festival and won a gold medal on 2 July 2011.

Over the years, Mr Li Lie Gang has continuously guided the direction and development of the Society as its artistic director. Ms Li Yun, a dedicated career woman with passion in choral music, took over the leadership of the Society from Oct 2017 onwards whereas the past president and vice president serve the Society in non- management posts of being adviser, honorable presidents.
